Top 10 Distilleries (Domains) in Armagnac
Armagnac is France's other AOC grape brandy, produced in Gascony in the southwest, with documented production going back to the early 14th century — older than Cognac. The defining technical difference is the Armagnac alambic, a continuous still operating at low strength (around 52-60% ABV off the still, compared to Cognac's 70%) that produces a more flavour-rich, less neutral distillate. Most Armagnac is produced by small family domains rather than large houses, and most carries a vintage.
1. Château de Laubade
Château de Laubade in Bas-Armagnac, the largest single estate in the appellation, produces a complete range from VSOP to vintage Armagnacs back to the 1940s. The estate manages 105 hectares of vines and ages stocks in an enormous network of cellars.
2. Domaine de Baraillon
Domaine de Baraillon is a small family estate in Bas-Armagnac making intensely fruity, traditional Armagnac. Vintage releases stretching back decades are the focus; the older bottles (1970s-80s) command devoted followings.
3. Darroze
Darroze is unusual: not a single estate but a négociant-éleveur, sourcing eaux-de-vie from small growers across Bas-Armagnac and ageing them under the Darroze name. The Les Grands Assemblages and single-domain vintage releases define the program.
4. Delord
Delord, in Lannepax, has been family-owned since 1893. The vintage range — currently offering vintages back to the 1920s — is one of the most extensive in Armagnac. The 25 Year Old and Hors d'Âge are core.
5. Château du Tariquet
Château du Tariquet is best known as a still-wine producer (the largest in Gascony) but produces excellent Bas-Armagnac alongside. The XO and 12 Year Old are excellent value introductions.
6. Domaine d'Espérance
Domaine d'Espérance in Mauvezin-d'Armagnac is run by Florence Fauchey-Magnan, one of the most respected younger producers. The traditional Folle Blanche distillates show what the (rare) Folle Blanche grape can do in Armagnac.
7. Domaine Boingnères
Domaine Boingnères in Le Frêche makes Armagnac exclusively from the Folle Blanche grape — the historic noble variety mostly displaced by Ugni Blanc and Baco. The Cépage Folle Blanche release is a benchmark.
8. Janneau
Janneau in Condom is one of the oldest commercial Armagnac houses (founded 1851) and unusually uses both column still and pot still distillation. The VSOP, XO, and vintage range cover the breadth.
9. Domaine d'Aurensan
Domaine d'Aurensan in Eauze (the heart of the Armagnac region) is a small organic producer. Annual single-cask, single-vintage releases form the core offering.
10. Marie Duffau
Marie Duffau, in Bas-Armagnac, is part of the Bernard Magrez group but maintains a distinct identity. The Hors d'Âge and the Napoléon expressions provide a solid mid-range introduction to the region.
