Top 10 Distilleries in Barbados
Barbados has the longest continuous rum tradition of any country in the world. The Sugar Plantation Hilton Estate in St. Lucy has documented distillation dating to 1647, and the island's category — Barbados Rum — is now legally protected by Geographical Indication, prohibiting additives, short-cut sweeteners, and external sourcing. The island's defining technique is the blended pot-and-column distillation style developed across four current operating distilleries.
1. Mount Gay, St. Lucy
Mount Gay, founded 1703 and the oldest continuously operating commercial rum brand in the world, distills at the Mount Gay Estate in St. Lucy parish on the island's north coast. The blend of pot still and column still distillates, matured in ex-bourbon barrels in tropical warehouses, defines the Bajan style. Eclipse, Black Barrel, XO, and the limited Master Blender Collection are the core range. Visitor tours run from the Mount Gay Visitor Centre in Bridgetown.
2. Foursquare, St. Philip
Foursquare Distillery in St. Philip parish, run by master distiller Richard Seale, has become arguably the most critically acclaimed rum producer in the world over the past decade. Seale's purist approach — no added sugar, no chill filtration, transparent age statements, tropical maturation only — has set the standard for connoisseur rum. The Foursquare Exceptional Cask Selection releases (Premise, Sagacity, Empery, etc.) are perennial collector favourites.
3. West Indies Rum Distillery, Brighton
The West Indies Rum Distillery (WIRD) in Brighton, owned by Maison Ferrand since 2017, supplies the spirit for Plantation rum's Barbados expressions. The distillery uses a complex stillhouse of pot stills, two column stills, and the unique "Rockley" still — though that particular vessel has not been operational for decades, its name remains attached to the unusually heavy distillates the site produces.
4. St. Nicholas Abbey, St. Peter
St. Nicholas Abbey in St. Peter parish is a small-batch operation set on a 17th-century Jacobean plantation house — one of only three Jacobean houses surviving in the Western Hemisphere. The estate produces rum from its own cane, distilled on a heritage 1890 Annandale Vincent steam-driven still. The 5, 8, 10, and 12 Year expressions are sold mainly on site.
5. Foursquare's Doorly's, St. Philip

6. Cockspur, Foursquare-distilled
Cockspur is a heritage Bajan brand currently distilled and bottled by Foursquare under a separate ownership structure. The Old Gold and Cockspur 12 Year expressions represent the traditional Bajan blended pot-and-column style at supermarket-friendly prices.
7. Plantation Barbados, WIRD-distilled
Plantation Barbados rums — XO 20th Anniversary, Grande Reserve, Pineapple, and others — are sourced from WIRD and finished in Cognac casks in Maison Ferrand's Château de Bonbonnet cellars in France. The dual-maturation approach (tropical then continental) is the brand's defining feature.
8. Real McCoy, Foursquare-distilled
The Real McCoy is a Foursquare-distilled rum brand created in homage to Bill McCoy, the Prohibition-era rum-runner who smuggled Bajan rum from Nassau to New York and gave English the phrase "the real McCoy" for genuine quality. The 3, 5, and 12 Year expressions are produced under Seale's standards.

R.L. Seale's 10 Year and Old Brigand are the family-named labels produced by Foursquare. These are the most direct expressions of the Seale family's Bajan rum philosophy without the Exceptional Cask Selection framing.
