Swedish whisky was virtually nonexistent before Mackmyra began distilling in 1999. Today Sweden has roughly twenty whisky distilleries plus the established mass-market vodka producers and a thriving aquavit tradition. The climate — extreme seasonal temperature variation — accelerates maturation in a way the country's distillers have learned to exploit deliberately.
1. Mackmyra, Gävle
Mackmyra in Gävle, founded 1999, was Sweden's first single malt whisky distillery and pioneered cool-climate Scandinavian whisky. The Gravity gravity-fed distillery building at Mackmyra is among the most architecturally distinctive whisky production sites in Europe. The Brukswhisky, Svensk Ek, and the elevation-aged warehouse expressions define the house style.
2. High Coast, Höga Kusten
High Coast Distillery (formerly Box Distillery) in the High Coast UNESCO World Heritage Site of northern Sweden produces whisky in extreme temperature swings — winters reaching -30°C, summers occasionally 30°C. The temperature delta accelerates cask interaction. The Älv, Hav, and Berg expressions are aged at different elevations in the surrounding landscape.
3. Absolut, Åhus
Absolut Vodka, distilled in Åhus in southern Sweden's Skåne region, is the world's third-largest vodka brand. 5. Hernö, Höga Kusten

6. Smögen, Hunnebostrand
