Patrón: A Deep Dive Into Premium Tequila

Patrón is the brand that created premium tequila as an international category. Founded in 1989 by John Paul DeJoria (of Paul Mitchell fame) and Martin Crowley, the brand brought to market the first widely-distributed tequila that was 100% agave, made by traditional methods, presented in hand-blown numbered glass bottles, and priced at a level that asked drinkers to take tequila seriously alongside Scotch and cognac. The category they invented now contains dozens of brands; Patrón remains the leader by volume.

The location

Patrón is distilled at the Hacienda Patrón distillery in the town of Atotonilco el Alto, in the Los Altos (Highlands) region of Jalisco — at around 2,100 metres of elevation. The Highlands agaves grow on iron-rich red soils and develop higher sugar content than Lowlands agaves; the climate is cooler and the agave matures more slowly. Patrón is exclusively Highland tequila.

100% blue agave

All Patrón is made from 100% blue Weber agave (Agave tequilana Weber, Blue), not from the mixto formula (51% agave, 49% other sugars) that defines lower-tier tequila. The agaves are harvested at seven to ten years and roasted in traditional small brick ovens (no autoclaves), then crushed in a tahona (a large volcanic stone wheel) for one production line and in a roller mill for another, with the two streams blended in the final product.

Distillation

Patrón uses small copper pot stills (alambic-style) for the final distillation, and triple-filters the resulting tequila. The combination of stone-crushed and mill-crushed agave, slow-roasted in brick ovens and small-batch distilled, gives Patrón its characteristic clean, citrus-forward flavor profile.

The bottles

The hand-numbered glass bottles, originally hand-blown in a Mexico City glass factory and now produced more industrially but still hand-finished, became part of the brand identity. The bottles are signed by individual workers, individually numbered, and consciously presented as objects with display value.

The range

Patrón Silver — unaged, bottled within weeks of distillation — is the bestseller and the textbook reference. Patrón Reposado spends 2 to 12 months in barrels (typically ex-bourbon American oak); Patrón Añejo spends 12 months minimum; Patrón Extra Añejo spends 3 years; the Roca Patrón sub-line is exclusively tahona-crushed; the Gran Patrón Burdeos, Gran Patrón Platinum, and Gran Patrón Piedra represent the top of the range.

The acquisition

In 2018 Bacardi acquired Patrón for a reported $5.1 billion — at the time the largest premium spirits acquisition ever — recognising the strategic value of the brand that defined the premium tequila category. The Hacienda Patrón has continued operating largely unchanged.
