Top 10 Calvados Distilleries in Normandy

Calvados is the AOC apple brandy of Normandy in northern France — and a smaller portion includes pear (sometimes called Calvados Domfrontais when the pear content is at least 30%). Three appellations exist: Calvados (broadest), Calvados Pays d'Auge (the most prestigious, requiring double distillation in copper pot stills and longer ageing), and Calvados Domfrontais (requiring the pear content). Cider is fermented, then distilled, and the eau-de-vie ages in oak — VS at 2+ years, VSOP at 4+, XO at 6+, with much older bottlings common.

1. Roger Groult (Pays d'Auge)

Roger Groult in Saint-Cyr-du-Ronceray is one of the most respected family Pays d'Auge producers. The Vénérable (8 Year), Doyen d'Âge (15 Year), Age d'Or (20 Year), and the dated vintage Calvados expressions are core. Pot still double distillation; long-aged in old casks.

2. Christian Drouin (Pays d'Auge)

Christian Drouin in Coudray-Rabut produces Pays d'Auge calvados from estate-grown apples and bought-in cider from neighbouring orchards. The Sélection, Réserve, VSOP, XO, and vintage expressions back to the 1960s define the range.

3. Père Magloire (Pays d'Auge)

Père Magloire in Pont-l'Évêque is one of the larger Pays d'Auge producers and the most widely distributed internationally. The VS, VSOP, XO, and the 12 Year Old Pays d'Auge offer a good range of price points.

4. Lemorton (Domfrontais)

Domaine Lemorton in Mantilly is the principal name in Calvados Domfrontais — the pear-content sub-appellation. Domfront uses small-fruit pear varieties (poire de Plant de Blanc, poire Fausset) that produce a particular floral, almost honeyed character. Lemorton Réserve and Réserve Vintage are core.

5. Boulard (Pays d'Auge)

Boulard, founded 1825 in Coquainvilliers, is one of the oldest commercial Calvados houses. The XO, Auguste, and rare Hors d'Age expressions define the premium range. Owned now by La Martiniquaise.

6. Père Jules (Pays d'Auge)

Père Jules in Saint-Désir is a small estate producing exclusively Pays d'Auge Calvados from estate-grown apples (Bisquet, Saint-Martin, and others). The Hors d'Âge (20+ years) is particularly sought after.

7. Adrien Camut (Pays d'Auge)

Camut in Saint-Maclou is one of the smallest and most exclusive Pays d'Auge producers — 24 hectares of orchards, all estate-grown apples, double pot still distillation, very long ageing. Privilège and 18 Year Old are the core releases.

8. Coquerel (Pays d'Auge)

Coquerel in Milly-sur-Thérain produces both Pays d'Auge and broader Calvados expressions. The XO, Sélection, and the limited Cuvée Boishus are core. Affordable entry to the category.

9. Berneroy (Calvados AOC)

Berneroy is a broader Calvados AOC producer — not Pays d'Auge — using column-still distillation. More accessible price point, useful for cooking and cocktail use as well as drinking.

10. Domaine de Montreuil (Pays d'Auge)

Domaine de Montreuil in Coupesarte is a small biodynamic Pays d'Auge producer focused on traditional methods and vintage releases. Limited production; emerging reputation in international markets.

Pays d'Auge centres on a small area between Caen and Lisieux — the calvados-tour heartland — while Domfrontais is to the south-west around Domfront. The Route du Cidre and Route des Pommiers signposted touring routes connect the principal estates. The interactive map shows the geography. Most producers welcome visits, but appointments are essential at the smaller estates.
