American rye whiskey by law must be made from at least 51% rye grain, aged in new charred oak, distilled to under 80% ABV, and bottled at minimum 40%. Canadian whisky has historically been called "rye" colloquially regardless of mashbill — Canadian production rules are quite different. Rye declined to near-extinction by the 1990s and has recovered dramatically since 2010.
